Log Truck Driver Needed!
$29.01 hourly rate
In aggregate, the Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.
Mendocino Forest Products Company, LLC (MFP) is looking for a Log Truck Driver to join our team in Scotia, CA! To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The key areas of focus for this position are as follows;
Responsibilities:
Drives truck and trailer to haul logs in a safe and efficient manner to designated company locations in Mendocino and Humboldt Counties.
- Drives truck and trailer to haul logs from logging sites to log deck or mill
- Applies knowledge of commercial driving and skill in maneuvering vehicle at varying speeds in difficult situations: such as heavy traffic, inclement weather, or in tight loading/unloading areas off highway and private dirt roads
- Abides by all Company, DOT, State and Federal transportation safety regulations
- May need to cut or remove pieces of bark from load prior to transporting using various small tools including; hand ax
- Ensures load is properly secured and weight is evenly distributed on truck and trailer. Checks binders and wrappers to ensure load is secure
- Inspects tractor, trailer and equipment for defects and safe operating condition before (pre-trip) and after trips as applicable also when stopped during the work day, and submits a driver’s daily vehicle inspection report on the condition no later than the end of each day
- Performs basic preventative maintenance to ensure fluid levels and tire pressures are maintained
- Brake adjustments are the responsibility of driver to ensure they are properly adjusted daily
- Maintains records required for compliance with State and Federal regulations including driver’s logs, records of fuel purchases, mileage records and other records required by law, or by Company standards
- Ensures that all shipping documentation (bills of landing, weight tickets, etc.) required to move with shipment are available for inspection, that appropriate paperwork accompanies shipments when delivered, and that signed bills of lading for proof of delivery are turned in daily
- Reports all accidents/incidents involving driver or company equipment immediately after incident occurs to Supervisor
- Promptly report any delays due to breakdown, weather or traffic conditions, or other emergencies. Reports if there are regular delays or abnormal delays in getting unloaded or loaded, or in the event of irregularities relating to pickup or deliver of logs
- Uses Company Radio and or Central Band (CB) radio ensuring appropriate communication and language
- Position travels outside the local area but usually within the state up to 95% of the time
Qualifications:
- Completed truck driving school with a minimum of one year over the road experience; or a minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- This position requires a Class "A" Drivers License, current DOT physical examination card, and clean DMV record.
- Log hauling experience is preferred
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure or legal manuals. Ability to complete/write regular documents related to the truck and delivery of materials
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and calculate load weight
- This position requires use of on-board truck computer
Physical Requirements
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 12 hours (intrastate); must be able to shift a manual transmission and operate foot pedals; must be able to perform bending to dig, pick up and or throw binders and wrappers with chains.
- Must be able to enter and exit the vehicle’s cab 8 to 10 times a day or more. Cab floor level is generally from 36 to 66 inches above ground level with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps and handholds; also requires bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching, reaching (including above shoulders), pulling, pushing and balancing.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 10 lbs.
- Must be able to spend at least 85% of the day sitting, 15% of the day walking on surfaces such as wood, dirt, asphalt and metal which are sometimes slippery and wet.
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- May use a double bit ax or shovel to dig. Ability to adjust trailer brakes by squatting or kneeling using small hand tools.
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, moving equipment, and truck vibration. The road conditions may at times, be slippery and/or dusty from dirt. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
