Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Performs utility and building mechanical system and equipment infrastructure assessments and oversees the design and replacement/upgrade of mechanical equipment and systems. Performs project management responsibilities for mechanical system upgrade efforts. Evaluates the operation of the central plants and utility systems and makes suggestions for improvements. Plans and coordinates utility outages in support of maintenance & repair and acts as primary liaison with campus projects that interact with existing utilities and/or incorporate new utilities.
Provides analysis, design and construction support for the Energy Management & Utilities team, Engineering & Energy (E&E) unit, other FM units and independent college projects and construction activities as they affect campus mechanical utilities. Assures that project goals include the improvement of utility system reliability and efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar related technology field.


Experience:
  • Four (4) – Seven (7) years of experience including design, commissioning, testing and/or operation and maintenance of mechanical infrastructure is required. Experience should be in performing similar duties with complex mechanical utility central plant systems.
  • Position requires at least three (3) years’ experience in the design and operating evaluation of Central Plant and infrastructure mechanical systems, including chillers, boilers, pumps, turbines, chilled and heating water, steam, domestic water and specialty plumbing systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to devise innovative solutions to problems.
  • Knowledge and experience designing, constructing and commissioning and maintaining mechanical systems.
  • Knowledgeable about plant and utility system operation and be capable of writing sequences of operation for mechanical systems, and be knowledgeable of mechanical and energy codes, products and current best practices for mechanical systems.
  • Effective communicator, both in oral and written form.
  • Ability to use computers and be adept at using AutoCAD, energy modelling, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

  • Knowledge and use of hydraulic evaluation software, such as Termis or Pipeflo .
  • Plant or Utility system operation and maintenance.

Incumbent must possess a driver’s license, as duties require the incumbent to travel to and from meetings and project sites both on and off campus. If driving a State vehicle, incumbent must possess a valid MD Class C driver’s license or equivalent with fewer than six (6) points.

Must have the ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders; to manipulate equipment, tools and supplies; to have the manual dexterity to operate a computer; to wear and work in personal protective equipment (safety footwear, hard hat, protective eye and ear wear, etc.); to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to lift 70 pounds. While the physical demands listed above may be experienced, the position is primarily an office environment.
