Job Summary:

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design of mechanical components and electrical enclosures. The candidate must possess an understanding of the fundamentals of mechanical design, 3D modeling, structural analysis, heat transfer, fluid flow, and design for manufacturability and assembly. The candidate must be highly motivated, able to effectively communicate in a cross-functional environment and have a customer-focused sense of urgency. The engineer will also be relied upon to answer any manufacturing questions/problems, as well as provide continuous improvement efforts to existing products.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prepare mechanical drawings of the transformer and part related documents in accordance with customer specification and established formats.
  • Review and analyze a variety of engineering data, customer specifications, documents, and reports.
  • Consult with engineering team to ensure the criteria are suitable for the proposed application and meet customer requirements.
  • Execute engineering changes through established processes and documentation.
  • Supports manufacturing and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Provide technical support to the customer.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper selection of transformer accessories.
  • Prepare specifications for purchase of accessories.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate well with all levels of the organization; strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well cross-functionally with multiple peers, production personnel, managers, and groups.
  • Ability to understand the manufacturing processes with emphasis on metal fabrication and assemblies. Apply DFM methodologies to deliver robust engineering packages emphasizing productivity in the manufacturing process.
  • Highly analytical with strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to find and correct the root cause of a problem.
  • Ability to efficiently shift priorities in a high paced environment.
  • Firm grasp of engineering concepts (such as tolerance analysis, heat transfer calculations, and designing for manufacturability) with experience designing mechanical systems and products.
  • Excellent math skills: ability to apply advanced mathematical principles and statistics to solve problems and verify designs.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required.
  • Power Magnetics experience strongly preferred (experience designing dry-type transformers of low and medium voltage, ranging from 1kVA – 4MVA)
  • Strong 3D design and modeling experience (AutoCad Inventor preferred).
  • Experience utilizing MS Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Experience utilizing ERP (manufacturing software).


Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
