POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Title: Laser Diode Opto-Mechanical Packaging Engineer

Overview:
The Packaging Engineer is responsible for BluGlass’s back-end packaging effort from die bond through final package
(Ex: T0-Cans, Photonic integrated, circuits, and so forth), reliability improvement, and support of failure analysis of
BluGlass proprietary next-generation GaN-based UV/VIS laser technology across multiple markets, such as Industrial,
Electronics, Scientific, Biotech, General lighting, and Automotive. Candidates must have experience in eutectic bonding and packaging of Laser Diodes and providing solutions to relevant, complex technical problems, ideally within
Commercial as well as Defense and Government-funded industries. Candidates must demonstrate expert analytical, problem-solving, and familiarity with laser diode multi-cell reliability modeling (FIT models, HAST, and HALT testing) and practical laboratory-based experience in multiple optoelectronic technologies, including FP, DFB, DBR, or VCSEL semiconductor laser diodes.

Objective:
Oversee all aspects of bonding, packaging, modeling, and reporting of next-generation GaN Diode Lasers that leverage the advantages of BluGlass proprietary Remote Plasma CVD (RPCVD) deposition technology. This role will contribute to reliability and FA concepts during new product development, qualification, and ongoing production.

Principal areas/functions:

75% Bonding and Packaging process development and failure analysis:

▪ Develop and maintain die bonding efforts establishing statistical process control and continuous yield and performance improvement efforts.

▪ Develop and maintain CoS bonding efforts, identifying and implementing hierarchical soldering solutions.
▪ Develop and maintain FAC and SAC lense placement and fiber coupling efforts.
▪ Support failure analysis (FA) processes as needed to determine root cause using internal resources or external vendors.
▪ Provide feedback for device design evolution.
▪ Support efforts to establish burn-in criteria, as well as HAST, HALT qualification processes, and muti-cell reliability protocols supporting product development, product qualification, and production screening.
▪ Analyze the laser device performance throughout development and reliability testing. Apply materials and physics understanding to correlate any performance drifts with design and process inputs.
▪ Collaborate with and learn from device design engineers and technical program managers (PMs) on new products from the initial concept through release to manufacturing.
▪ Work with the Reliability and FA Engineer to develop, execute, and improve BluGlass qualification plans, internal infrastructure as well as external contract manufacturers (CMs).
▪ Collaborate with test engineers and technicians to execute functional testing for each product. Tests include laser current-power-voltage, spectra/junction temperature measurements, near and far field measurements, etc.

▪ Collaborate on the qualification reporting in the form of email updates, customer-facing presentations, internal
NPI reviews, and documented qualification reports.

▪ Define key technical objectives and manage projects through the various development phases (feasibility, alpha
[design and development], beta [reliability and qualification]) and into production to meet program milestones and product reliability requirements.

▪ Collaborate with testing and reliability groups and participate in the design and setup of new test systems needed to measure laser diode performance

25% Technical Program Interaction:

▪ Maintain knowledge of state-of-the-art principles for advancing the packaging related performance of laser diodes.

▪ Monitor Laser Diode performance in development and production

▪ Establish, monitor, analyze, and report key performance metrics to project teams and management.

▪ Participate in the development of Patent Applications.

▪ Collaborate to publish & present BLG results at Industry Events & Trade shows.

▪ Participate in program reporting, proposal writing, and program management for commercial and government programs.

Background/Skills:

  • Masters’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Materials Science with 8+ years of experience or a

Ph.D. +3 years of experience in Laser Diode Packaging Environment

  • Experience in Gallium Nitride materials systems (packaging-design/modeling, epitaxy, fabrication, or testing) is highly desirable.
  • Development and execution of package design and implementation strategy
  • Demonstrated leadership and the ability to direct and influence the organization across multiple functional departments is essential. Strong team player.
  • Hands-on bonding, and package assembly processes specifically of laser diodes including hermetic testing
  • Hands-on testing of reliability stress such as accelerated temperature, high humidity, temperature and power cycling, ESD is a plus
  • Deep statistical analysis of large datasets
  • Experience with software data analysis tools (JMP, Minitab, Excel or similar) and data processing software

(Python, Matlab or similar)

  • Knowledge of semiconductor device physics and/or reliability engineering is a plus
  • Strong organizational and decision-making skills.
  • Good communication skills (both oral and written) are required

Additional Input:

The position will be based out of the BluGlass Packaging and Test facility located in Nashua, NH. Remote working for this position is possible but on-site will be required much of the time. This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements; therefore, a “US Person” is required as defined by 22C.F.R. §120.15. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, and asylee designations.

About BluGlass, Ltd.:

BluGlass Limited, listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX: BLG), is a global leader commercializing a breakthrough technology using Remote Plasma Chemical Vapour Deposition (RPCVD) to manufacture high- performance Opto-semiconductor devices.

BluGlass has invented a new process using RPCVD to grow advanced materials such as gallium nitride (GaN) and indium gallium nitride (InGaN), crucial to the production of high-efficiency devices such GaN Fabry Perot and vertical

cavity laser diodes used in next-generation devices from Industrial and electronic materials processing to medical, biotech, virtual reality, and others.
